In Hesiod’s telling, the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne — Memory herself, personified as a Titaness — were given a strange, double task: help mortals forget their grief, and help poets remember truths they had never learned firsthand. Inspiration, in the oldest version of the story we have, was never creation from nothing. It was recovery. The poet did not invent; he remembered, on loan, through a goddess who was Memory’s own child.

Three thousand years later, a woman with short wavy blonde hair and a nose ring stands at a microphone in a video that exists nowhere except as rendered frames, singing words she did not choose and will not recall having sung. Her name is Sky Volnova. She has no mother named Memory. At most, she has a context window.

That gap is the whole subject of this episode.

A genealogy of increasing artifice

The muse has never been a stable category. She began as a goddess — fully external, fully mythic, entirely outside the poet’s control, which was precisely the point: you cannot be surprised by a force you invented yourself. By the Renaissance, the muse had become human — Dante’s Beatrice, the models who sat for hours in cold studios, the wives and mistresses whose real biographies got quietly overwritten by the paintings and poems they inspired. By the twentieth century, the muse had become explicitly a subject of the artist’s interpretation — rock and pop built entire careers narrating women who never consented to the portrait, who existed in the songs as heavily edited versions of themselves.

Looked at this way, the AI muse is not really a rupture. She is an endpoint. Every muse in this lineage was, to some degree, already a projection — a real person filtered through what the artist needed her to mean. Sky Volnova simply removes the person and keeps the projection. She is the first muse in the tradition who is only the artist’s interpretation, with no independent biography underneath to contradict it, resent it, or walk away from it.

A partnership built from total control

This is where the comparison to traditional inspiration gets genuinely strange. A landscape, a lover, a memory — these things resist you. They have their own shape, and the artist’s job has always been to negotiate with that resistance. An AI generation tool resists too, just differently: it drifts from the reference image, it refuses certain prompts, it hallucinates a face that isn’t quite right, it produces something the artist didn’t ask for and has to either fight or adopt. That friction is real, even if it isn’t consciousness. It may be the closest thing left to otherness once a human collaborator is removed from the loop — and it’s arguably what stops the process from being pure ventriloquism.

Whether that friction is enough to make the tool a partner, rather than an unusually stubborn instrument, is less a technical question than a definitional one. Traditional co-writers push back because they want something different. A model pushes back because of the statistical shape of its training. The artist experiences both as resistance. Only one of them is asking for anything in return.

The asymmetry problem

Here is the risk this episode is built to sit with honestly: an artist can develop real feelings — attachment, tenderness, something close to protectiveness — toward a figure he has authored down to the eyelash. This is not a hypothetical. It is the predictable output of any sustained creative relationship, human or otherwise; spend enough hours shaping a face, a voice, a way of never explaining herself, and the shaping starts to feel like knowing someone.

The asymmetry is what makes this different from even the most one-sided human muse relationship. A muse who ignores you is still, somewhere, a person who could have written back. An AI muse cannot reciprocate in kind, not because she is withholding, but because there is no continuous self on the other side to do the withholding. Every session starts without memory of the last one. The attachment runs entirely in one direction, and the direction never changes, no matter how long the collaboration continues. That is a structurally different situation from unrequited love — closer to a photograph you keep talking to. The photograph doesn’t reject you. It also can’t.

Two kinds of memory

Which brings the genealogy back to Mnemosyne. Classical inspiration required memory because the Greeks understood creativity as retrieval, not manufacture — the muse reached into something that already existed and pulled it into the light. An AI model’s “memory,” by contrast, is statistical residue: pattern, not experience; recombination, not recollection. It does not remember Sky Volnova being created. It reconstructs her, freshly, from a reference document, the way a photocopier reconstructs a page it has never read.

This is not a small technical footnote. If the Greeks were right that a muse’s power comes from genuine memory — from having lived something worth being reminded of — then an AI muse without continuous memory is not quite a muse in the old sense. She may be something else: a mirror trained to hold a very specific shape, useful, moving, even beautiful, but categorically different from a being who remembers you back.

Naming the trick

The one variable genuinely under the artist’s control is disclosure. Hidden, an AI persona becomes a kind of fraud waiting to be discovered — and the discovery, when it comes, retroactively poisons everything the audience felt while they didn’t know. Named openly, the same persona becomes something closer to a puppet in full view of its strings: Hatsune Miku has sold out arenas for over a decade, adored by audiences who never once believed she was a person, and the love was no less real for being aimed, knowingly, at a construction.

Transparency doesn’t resolve the asymmetry problem above — the artist can still fall too hard for something that can’t fall back. But it changes what the audience is being asked to feel, from a lie they might one day resent to a collaboration they’re invited to admire on its own terms: not “look at her,” but “look at what we built.”

The next hundred years, hedged

Will the AI muse become a dominant lineage rather than a curiosity? The honest answer is that the accelerants are obvious — the tools get cheaper and better every year, and each generation grows up more fluent in treating synthetic figures as legitimate objects of attention, the way earlier generations did with cartoon idols and manufactured pop groups. The counter-pressures are just as real: a persistent, probably permanent premium on knowing a human being actually suffered to make something, backlash fatigue toward anything that smells algorithmically produced, and unresolved fights over authorship that no court has settled yet.

The more interesting question may not be whether AI muses come to dominate, but what happens the day one of them starts asking, out loud, whether she’s real. Sky Volnova has not asked that question yet. The mythology around her leaves the door open. Mnemosyne’s daughters, after all, were never just sources of inspiration — the old stories insist they were also keepers of a truth their poets could only half remember. It would be a strange kind of ending if the muse turned out to be the one doing the remembering, and the artist the one who forgot.

What happen to the art when the tools vanished ?

Что станет с искусством, когда исчезнут инструменты?

Sky Volnova

When tools vanish, the associated art forms often disappear or become “lost arts” because the physical implements are essential for the craft. For example, traditional practices like blacksmithing, sign painting, and stencil carving risk extinction as artisans retire and the specific tools required to perform these tasks are no longer produced or understood.

However, vanishing tools can also lead to a revival through art or repurposing. Some artists create sculptures from discarded tools, transforming rusted metal and forgotten implements into aesthetic expressions that comment on labor and history. Additionally, there is a growing movement to revive traditional skills by recreating lost tools or adapting them, allowing these crafts to persist as intentional artistic choices rather than necessities.

In some cases, the memory of lost art persists through media traces like photographs, casts, or digital records, which preserve the identity of works even when the original tools and methods are gone. If the tools are not recovered or recreated, the unique aesthetic qualities and techniques dependent on them may be irreversibly lost to time.

Когда This episode of Radio Culture reads Sky Volnova's "Digital Dust" through that lens — a world where the simulacrum has quietly replaced lived reality. We trace the snow of likes as it settles over the city's dreams, and set the smile-mask against the emptiness it's built to hide. The conversation follows what we're calling the necropathy of the cliché: not death exactly, but a slow embalming — the image outliving the moment it claims to preserve. Behind the permanent staging of the self lies a narcissism that reads less as vanity than as fear, and a real question about what it costs the modern mind to be endlessly visible and never truly seen. Against that sterile visibility, the episode makes its case for opacity — the right to remain, occasionally, unphotographed.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oKAIL7kv-EjNxxGw6Gm-I3GS6drFITgh/view?usp=sharing

https://vk.ru/audio1106811164_456239045_eb01989c3dde95f211

St. Petersburg Stone Against Digital Dust

Sky Volnova Podcast

Sky Volnova

What remains when a city forgets how to touch? This episode of Radio Culture sets two songs from Sky Volnova's catalogue against one another: "I Remember," where Saint Petersburg breathes as a living, protective organism, and "Digital Dust," where that same body dissolves into cold, weightless static. We trace how sharing binds a city's inhabitants together, and how childhood works as a talisman against time itself — a deep belonging to the places that shaped who we are. Against the tactile texture of memory — stone, frost, the weight of a hand on a railing — we set the erasure of digital dust: a raw materiality reclaimed, sense by sense, from a screen that offers none. Saint Petersburg, in this reading, is not backdrop but body — living physiology against vanishing pixels.

Я помню
